Special Teams Remain in Flux for the Patriots

Stephen Gostkowski is a Tennessee Titan now, and the struggles to find a kick or punt returner have continued. Little is known for sure, but at least there are respectable options this year.

What We Know

Jake Bailey had a strong rookie season, and there's plenty of reasons to believe that the best has yet to come. There's a reason why he was drafted, and he didn't meet his collegiate heights in terms of yards per punt in 2019. The future is bright.

Joe Cardona will return as the Patriots' long snapper for the sixth consecutive season. He's about as dependable as they come. After all, when was the last time you saw a botched snap from him?

Matthew Slater will certainly also return as a specialist on coverage units. There's also a chance that he'll pick up some kick return responsibilities.

What Remains in Limbo

Justin Rohrwasser was drafted in the fifth round to be Gostkowski's successor. It doesn't look like that's working out. The Patriots brought back Nick Folk, and it appears that he'll serve as their kicker once the season starts. Rohrwasser likely sticks around on the practice squad, since he hasn't showcased enough for another team to sign him.

Julian Edelman will return some punts, but it's hard to imagine he'll reclaim full-time duties at this stage in his career. Kyle Dugger and Gunner Olszewski seem like the top challengers.

Kick returner duties are also vacant. Slater has garnered some consideration, but Dugger and Damiere Byrd have also fielded kicks during training camp.

When it comes to the return game, it would've been ideal for there to have been a preseason. September looks like it will be trial by fire.
